Because Singer wanted an unknown for the movie. He didn’t want a big star, with a bigger ego. He wanted someone that would put 110% into the movie and try their hardest to make it what it should be.
And even if he was going to pick a big time actor, I think he hit the nail on the head with Brandon Routh. He looks like Chris Reeves, and he sounds exactly like him. He even has him mannerisms to a Tee!
Brandon has stated before that he grew up thinking of Chris Reeves as Superman and that he was a huge fan. So it was like a dream come true for him.
